Pedigree Foundation's Write a Post, Help a Dog!

I may be writing a blog about books but, never fear, I LOVES ME SOME DOGS! Especially rescued dogs and more especially senior dogs. Mostly because I have one (she's rescued and a senior but wasn't a senior when I rescued her but I won't hold that against her). She is prominently featured in the photos for my "Teaser Tuesdays" and "Waiting on Wednesdays." (I know, I know, she's freakin' adorable, isn't she?) So, when I randomly ran across a posting about The Pedigree Foundation's quest to support shelters and rescues and the dogs they help on a fellow book blog site I thought I should definitely take part in this Blog Hop! And thanks to the Two Little Cavaliers for some additional information.

Without further ado here's the scoop:

Pedigree is resurrecting is insanely successful Write a Post, Help a Dog program. In 2010, 391 bloggers wrote about the program and with each post, Pedigree donated 20 pounds of its Healthy Longevity dog food to shelter animals. In all, 7,820 pounds of food was donated to two shelters renowned for their care of senior dogs: Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco and Castaway Critters in Harrisburg, Pa.

How you can help in 2011

Simply spread the word about Write a Post, Help a Dog 2011 and once again Pedigree will donate 20 pounds of food for each blog post.  If you don’t have a blog feel free to tweet about the campaign or share on Facebook so your friends who do blog can participate. All bloggers are welcome even if you do not generally talk about pets on your blog. Its all about using Social Media for Social Good.
Here’s how it works:
The Write a Post, Help a Dog program is aimed at raising awareness of the more then 4 million dogs that wind up in shelters and breed rescues each year. As well as to help get them all food (our goal is 10,000 lbs of food in the next two weeks) for the more than four million dogs that wind up in shelters and breed rescues each year.

For each blog post mentioning the Pedigree Foundation from now until midnight ET on September 3, Pedigree will donate 20 pounds of its new dry Pedigree recipe food for dogs — its best recipe ever — to a shelter, because every dog deserves leading nutrition.

Feel free to make your post more visually appealing by using either or both of the two images seen in this post.

The Pedigree Foundation — a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit organization is committed to helping dogs by providing grants to shelters and rescues and encouraging dog adoption. This year the Foundation has already raised more than $376,570 against its goal of $1.5 million to carry out its work to fund grants that not only help shelters operate, but to further shelter innovations.

The Pedigree Foundation depends on charitable contributions from individuals to carry out its mission to help dogs find loving homes. In addition to writing a blog post, here's how you can help:

Donate online at http://pedigreefoundation.org/donate.aspx

Apply for a shelter grant from the Pedigree Foundation by completing a form at www.pedigreefoundation.org

Purchase Dogs Rule Gear at www.dogsrulegear.com where the proceeds go to the Pedigree Foundation to help loving dogs find a home. SPECIAL OFFER: Get 10 percent off Dogs Rule Gear by using the promo code BlogPaws10 from August 22 - September 30.

Then, link up to our Blog Hop below, hosted by the Pedigree BlogPaws bloggers to help spread the word about Write a Post, Help a Dog.

Review: My Life Undecided by Jessica Brody

My Life UndecidedMy Life Undecided by Jessica Brody

The Scoop:

At two years of age "Baby Brooklyn" fell down a mine shaft. At 15 years of age Brooklyn (no longer Baby) listens to her best friend, Shayne, and decides to host a party in one of her mom's model homes and it catches on fire. In between there have been other decisions that had unfortunate circumstances and the house fire was the culminating disaster that led Brooks to believe that she was incapable of making good decisions. As her community service requirement for the house fire she is scheduled to assist at a local nursing home and becomes the sole entertainment of Mrs. Moody whose one and only form of diversion from her usually "moody" mood is being read to from the book series Choose the Story. In this series the reader makes various decisions to move the story along all in the hopes of coming to the end of the book as the victorious adventurer (but the majority of the storylines end up resulting in the adventurer's death). During the reading of these books to Mrs. Moody, Brooklyn comes up with the idea of getting other people to make decisions for her by creating a blog and polling her readers. And though some of her polls were unimportant in the grand scheme of things (to read The Grapes of Wrath or The Old Man and the Sea or whether or not to try out for the rugby team) there were some tough decisions that she put on the polls that Brooklyn left up to total strangers. Whether to stick with high-maintenence popularity and her faithless "best friend" by taking the path provided by the sexy new student, "Rhett Butler" or to take a new path of semi-ivisibility by becoming closer with "Heimlich" the debate team boy that saved her from choking. These decisions, plus many others, are on Brooklyn's path to finding out who and what she wants to be and in finally understanding WHO she is means maybe she can have her life decided.

Are You Listening? Audiobook review: The Indigo Notebook by Laura Resau

The Indigo NotebookThe Indigo Notebook by Laura Resau

The Scoop:

Zeeta and her free-spirited, wanderlust, ESL-teaching, Rumi-quoting mother Layla have lived in 15 different countries. That's one country for each year that Zeeta has been alive. And for each of those countries, Zeeta has kept a notebook (well, since she could write, at least) that holds her observations, thoughts and the stories of the native people. This year, the year of living in Otavalo, Ecuador, Zeeta has an indigo notebook.

Now, more than ever (she's just three years away from going to college) with the year-after-year of moves and making new friends and learning new customs Zeeta wishes for her mother to finally grow some roots and just "stick." And, maybe, Zeeta's wish is going to come true in Ecuador. Even while enlisting her newfound friends at the local market to find a potential suitor for her mother Zeeta notices subtle changes in her mother. Because, after a near-death experience at a waterfall her mother is beginning to morph into somebody who could be more tradtional, more grounded, more parental. Layla goes from having a boyfriend that is a surfing clown (even down to making making balloon animals) to one that is more stable and has a career in the business world. During this time Zeeta has met an American teenager named Wendell who has traveled to Otavalo to find out the identities of his birth parents. Zeeta agrees to become his translator and they set out on a journey to learn of the Otavalenos and the Quechua Indians that might hold an answer to Wendell's heritage. And, Zeeta, besides being tasked to help Wendell to find answers to his own life (and mysterious abilities) might be finding out that maybe the life she's always been dreaming about isn't exactly what she wants after all.

"Waiting on" Wednesday: Between the Sea and Sky by Jaclyn Dolamore

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are barely able to restrain our enthusiasm for.

My pick this week is Between the Sea and Sky by Jaclyn Dolamore due out October 25, 2011 by Bloomsbury USA Children's Books.

For as long as Esmerine can remember, she has longed to join her older sister,Cover Image Dosinia, as a siren--the highest calling a mermaid can have. When Dosinia runs away to the mainland, Esmerine is sent to retrieve her. Using magic to transform her tail into legs, she makes her way unsteadily to the capital city. There she comes upon a friend she hasn't seen since childhood--a dashing young man named Alandare, who belongs to a winged race of people. As Esmerine and Alandare band together to search for Dosinia, they rekindle a friendship . . . and ignite the emotions for a love so great, it cannot be bound by sea, land, or air.

My Thoughts:
Are mermaids the new vampire (or zombie, or werewolf)? Between this one and Mandy Hubbard's Ripple and Tera Lynn Childs' Fins series (oh, and the selkies in Wendy Delsol's upcoming book Frost) there are quite a few mermaid books flooding the shelves (I know, lame, but pun totally intended). Ok, maybe it is due to growing up in the time of Splash and Disney's A Little Mermaid, but call me a sucker for any book that has a mermaid in it. I look forwarding to reading this one and hoping it does the mermaid tail, uh, tale justice.

Teaser Tuesday (8/23/11)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:
The Eternal Sea (Everlasting, #2)
""Her mum had an affair with that McGreenery bloke, then took off pregnant with him." Ira jerked a thumb toward Samuel. "She had a map that led to a stone that could bring someone back to life, right? So we got the map, raced that bloke McGreenery up Spencer's Bay, beat him to the stone, and now, much to everyone's pleasure, he's dead." Ira brushed off his palms, pleased with himself. Camille stared at him, horrified."

In My Mailbox (4)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme started by The Story Siren where bloggers share what books we have either received or purchased that week.

This is a huge backlog from since I've come back from vacation. I (unwisely) chose to unfreeze my holds a few days before my return. Needless to say I am now inundated with way too many books

From the library:

Dead Rules by Randy Russell
 Crush Control by Jennifer Jabaley
Forgotten by Cat Patrick
Belladonna by Mary Finn

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls #3) by Maggie Stiefvater (audiobook)
I had been literally checking my library account FOREVER, uh, every single day waiting for them to get it processed and on the shelf to me--that was a time when I wish my employee status got me the book faster.
The Ruby Notebook by Laura Resau
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
I procrastinated way too long to read Maggie's other books after admitting my love of the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. I have no excuse for my failure but I will rectify it immediately.
The premise put me in mind a bit of Beauty Queens by Libba Bray so we'll see how it goes.
Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley
Cloaked by Alex Flinn

And to add even more stuff to my mailbox I ran across some more unbeatable deals at both barnesandnoble.com and amazon.com for books all under $4.
Bought:

I love, Love, LOVE this book and decided that I couldn't beat the price and had to have a copy of my own.
My Life as an Experiment: One Man's Humble Quest to Improve Himself by Living As a Woman, Becoming George Washington, Telling No Lies, and Other Radical Tests by A.J. Jacobs
I listened to the audio of this book and it was so much fun--the things people will do for the sake of journalism. It's nice that you can read a chapter at a time for separate experiments he does.
Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
Beginner's Greek by James Collins

Secretariat by William Nack
Cracked Up To Be by Courtney Summers
If I Stay (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman
The audio version of this book had me desiring to stay in my car to finish it and if you knew how much I hate commuting then you would know how much I enjoyed listening to this story.

I have way more than I know what to do with but, still, I want to know--what's in your mailbox?

Review: Fins are Forever (Fins #2) by Tera Lynn Childs

Fins Are ForeverFins Are Forever by Tera Lynn Childs

The Scoop:

We pick up a few weeks after Lily and Quince are have their bond severed after the accidental kiss in the prequel, Forgive My Fins. The bond, however, opened Lily's eyes to how she really feels about Quince and they have become very close in a very short time. In Fins are Forever we are joined by Lily's cousin Dosinia (or Doe as she's called) who has been exiled from their underwater kingdom of Thalassinia by Lily's father, King Whelk. As an exile Doe doesn't have any of her mer-powers and must rely upon Lily for guidance on living in the human world. If you read the first book you will know that there is no love lost between the two girls and it is very begrudgingly that Doe accepts Lily's advice and teachings.

As a result of Lily's relationship with Quince she has decided to forfeit her reign as a mer-queen to live on land with the boy she loves. The life altering decision must also include what she will do with her life (instead of ruling Thalassinia like it was always expected). Along this path of decision-making Lily must find out the reason Doe was exiled and why she did what she did and determine the real reason her guppyhood friend Tellin has sought her out after all these years. Does he really want to just renew an old friendship or is there something more he isn't telling her?

"Waiting on" Wednesday: What Boys Really Want by Pete Hautman

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are barely able to restrain our enthusiasm for.

My pick this week is What Boys Really Want by Pete Hautman due out January 1, 2012 by Scholastic Press.

National Book Award winning author Pete Hautman lets us in on the secret.
Lita is the writer. Adam is the entrepreneur. They are JUST FRIENDS.
What Boys Really WantSo Adam would never sell copies of a self-help book before he'd even written it. And Lita would never try to break up Adam's relationship with Blair, the skankiest girl at school. They'd never sabotage their friends Emily and Dennis. Lita would never date a guy related to a girl she can't stand. They'd never steal each other's blog posts. And Adam would never end up in a fist fight with Lita's boyfriend. Nope, never.
Adam and Lita might never agree on what happened, but in this hilarious story from Pete Hautman, they manage to give the world a little more insight into what boys and girls are really looking for.

My Thoughts:
After not having read anything by Pete Hautman it was recommended to me to read The Big Crunch. I liked the simplicity of the story that juxtaposed nicely with the complicity of falling in love. His way of writing had just the right touch to keep me interested in the characters and their journey towards a new relationship. His amusing book trailer for The Big Crunch also clued me in to his sense of humor which sounds like makes an appearance in this new book. Although, I have to say, I hope this isn't the final version of the cover--it's a little bit blah compared to his last book.

Hunger Games movie poster extraordinaire!

This has to be the coolest movie poster for what I hope is going to be the coolest movie series (after Harry Potter, natch) in the world. I'm sure many of you have seen this and are ooohhing and ahhhing over it but I needed to have it on my blog so I could say I had a little part of The Hunger Games of my own.

And, thanks to Entertainment Weekly (of which I am a long time subscriber and huge fan), we also have some photos from the set of The Hunger Games.

Are You Listening? Audiobook review: The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

The Chosen OneThe Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

The Scoop:
Kyra Leigh Carlson is almost 14 years old. Kyra loves books. Kyra is in love with Joshua. But those two loves don't matter because Kyra is one of The Chosen Ones. The Chosen Ones are a isolated, polygamous cult. And, Kyra, along with her 21 brothers and sisters, her three mothers, her father and everybody else in the Compound are under the rule of the Prophet Childs. Under his "reign," any book except the bible has been outlawed and removed from the Compound. It is also forbidden to be seen with, let alone touch or kiss, a sect member of the opposite sex. With her secretive trips to the Ironton County Mobile Library on Wheels for contraband reading and her clandestine midnight meetings with 16-year-old Joshua, Kyra is already wallowing in the guilt of her sins. When her family is family is visited by the Prophet and his Apostles it is assumed that it is to announce that her father will become a new apostle for The Chosen Ones. They are all stunned, none more than Kyra, when the announcement is that Prophet Childs has had a vision and it is of Kyra becoming the seventh wife to her 60-plus-year-old uncle. With the books from the Mobile Library (like Harry Potter and Bridge to Terabithia) opening her eyes to a bigger world than what she experiences closed off in her compound and Joshua's love opening her heart to more possibilities in life as well as the abject horror and repulsion she feels at becoming a wife to her uncle, Kyra begins a struggle within herself on whether she should stay with the family she loves and the life that she knows or run from the horrible future ahead into something completely unknown.

So, a few weeks ago I WOW'd about Maggie Stiefvater's upcoming book, The Scorpio Races. Now the book trailer has been released with original artwork and music by Maggie herself (I'm pretty sure you can call her a triple threat--she writes, she is artistically talented and she is musically inclined--if I didn't love all the stuff she did I'm sure I'd envy her talents) and it is pretty amazing.

Review: Enchanted Ivy by Sarah Beth Durst

Enchanted IvyEnchanted Ivy by Sarah Beth Durst

The Scoop:

Lily Carter doesn't know there are two Princetons (as in Princeton University). Two Princetons that exist parallel to each other--one mystical, one normal. All it takes is one step through the FitzRandolph Gateway to get from one Princeton to the other. As long as you have "the key."

Lily and her mother travel with Lily's grandfather to his 50th class reunion. Upon her arrival she is given the option for early admission that is guaranteed without having to submit grades or SAT scores. All she must do is find the Ivy Key. First she must figure out what the Ivy Key is. With the help of the mysterious Tye and his tiger-striped hair and the blushing and beautiful Jake, Lily uncovers the meaning of the key and also her own magical background and the truth behind her father's death.

What a Prize! Sash & Em's Sweetly by Jackson Pearce Giveaway

On the blog A Tale of Two Bookies, Sash & Em (who are also celebrating their 300 followers) have a giveaway for Jackson Pearce's new book Sweetly which is part of the series that includes Sisters Red.

Check out their blog and enter one of their many awesome giveaways!
Here's a trailer for Sweetly to whet your appetite:

"Waiting on" Wednesday: Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1) by Tera Lynn Childs

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It lets us all gush about what soon-to-be released books we are barely able to restrain our ethusiasm for.

My pick this week is Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1) by Tera Lynn Childs due out September 6th 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books.

From Goodreads.com:

Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls, #1)Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed my way through the Oh. My. Gods books and am now working my way through the Forgive My Fins books. I adore Tera Lynn Childs and the Greek mythology themed books she writes so it is with bated breath that I sit on pins and needles for the start of a new series (and this time it looks like it will be three books instead of two).
After the hoopla of the Percy Jackson series, which I could never quite get into despite my love of mythology and mythology-based stories, I was so excited to come across the Oh. My. Gods. books and find that they were right up my genre alley (so to speak). To have another series of mythological themed books by Tera Lynn Childs is just icing on the cake!

Where Have I Been? At the beach!

I've been a little bit absent on my reviews and stuff for the past week. I have a really good reason for that--I was soaking up some rays at the beach. It was a far cry from the dreary(ish) summer that we've been enjoying (?) in the beautiful, but admittedly very, very cool and rainy, Pacific Northwest. In between just lazing around on the beach and working really hard on projects like the sand castle you see below I had a chance to read several fun books and will get some reviews up as soon as I can.

Happy Summer!
